Chemical Peels: Pre & Post Treatment Instructions

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

To achieve optimal results and a safe treatment, please follow these pre-treatment guidelines:
  • Wait at least one year after completing Accutane (isotretinoin) therapy before undergoing a chemical peel.
  • One week prior to treatment, avoid:
    • Electrolysis
    • Depilatory creams
    • Waxing
    • Laser hair removal
  • Three days before your appointment, discontinue use of the following:
    • Retin-A®, Renova®, Differin®, Tazorac®
    • Skincare products containing retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), or benzoyl peroxide
    • Exfoliating treatments or products that may cause skin dryness or irritation
If you have a history of herpes simplex (cold sores), consult your provider about preventive measures before treatment. If you develop skin irritation (such as sunburn, open wounds, or excessive sensitivity) before your appointment, contact our office to determine whether rescheduling is necessary.

Contraindications

Chemical peels are not recommended for those with:
  • Recent chemotherapy or radiation treatments
  • Allergies to salicylates (aspirin) or phenol
  • Active rashes or skin conditions
  • Vitiligo
  • Autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

What to Expect During Treatment

During the application of the peel, you may experience:
  • Mild stinging, tingling, or warmth
  • Temporary redness and skin tightness
  • A yellow or orange tinge on the skin (this will fade within a few hours)
Your provider may offer a handheld fan for additional comfort.

What to Expect in the Days Following Your Peel

  • 24 hours post-treatment: Skin may feel tight and begin preparing for the peeling process.
  • 48-72 hours post-treatment: Peeling will typically begin and may last between 2-5 days.
  • DO NOT pick or pull at peeling skin, as this may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Some individuals may experience extreme dryness following treatment. Continue using post-care products recommended by your provider to maintain skin hydration.

Post-Treatment Care

To maximize your results and ensure proper healing, follow these post-peel care instructions:
  • Your skin may feel tight and appear red.
  • A temporary yellow or orange tint may occur, which will fade within hours.
  • Avoid washing your face until bedtime, then cleanse gently using lukewarm or cool water. Do not use washcloths, exfoliating devices, or scrubs.
  • Refrain from using topical products containing AHAs, retinols, vitamin A, or exfoliating agents until peeling is complete.
  • Protect your skin from sun exposure for at least one week by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen, such as Essential Defense Mineral Shield, each morning and reapplying throughout the day.
  • Avoid excessive heat and sweating, including hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, and strenuous exercise.

Resuming Skincare & Treatments

After your peel, wait until the peeling process is fully complete before undergoing additional skincare treatments, such as:
  • Facials
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Laser treatments
  • Hair removal
  • Cosmetic injections

Peeling Variability & Expected Results

The degree of visible peeling varies from person to person and does not determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Even if peeling is minimal, the skin is still renewing itself at an accelerated rate, leading to noticeable improvements over time. Factors that may contribute to reduced visible peeling:
  • First-time chemical peel treatments
  • Significant sun damage (peeling may increase with subsequent treatments)
  • Frequent chemical peels performed at shorter intervals
  • Regular use of exfoliating agents such as Retin-A®, AHAs, or other chemical exfoliants
Regardless of the extent of peeling, your skin will still experience renewal and improvement following the treatment. For best results, consult with your provider about the ideal chemical peel plan for your skin concerns.
